PRESENTATION

The Global Call Against Poverty (GCAP) is a world-wide alliance of social organizations fighting against poverty and inequality. This alliance calls for worldwide political leaders to meet the promises made in 2000 at the United Nations World Summit to accomplish the Millennium Development Goals and eradicate poverty.
GCAP considers it necessary to include the following themes in the public agenda:

  1. Public accountability and government-spending transparency, just governance, and human rights enforcement.
  2. Fair and equitable trade rules.
  3. A major increase in quantity and quality of the aid for development.
  4. Cancellation of debt from poor countries.
  5. Inclusion of gender equality as essential to eradicate poverty.

Who are the members of GCAP?
GCAP is a global alliance made up of a wide range of coalitions, non-governmental organizations, grassroots groups, trade unions, youth and women organizations, faith groups, intellectual individuals, and artists, who are all committed to the fight against poverty.  These coalitions promote the activities and objectives of the Global Campaign Against Poverty at a national level.
In Buenos Aires, FOCO works as a connection to the campaign.
Under the motto “let’s make MDG real working for a bicentennial without poverty and exclusion,” FOCO coordinates the efforts of organizations and individuals that adhere to the Campaign’s objectives.
Despite knowing that the Millennium Development Goals and those agreed upon by the country are far from securing a more just and equal society, FOCO and the organizations committed to GCAP see them as an opportunity to raise those important issues at social discussions and generate people’s interest in the establishment of an integrating democracy.

The Millennium Goals, approved by 189 countries in a World Summit of the United Nations in 2000, are as follows:
1. ERADICATE POVERTY AND HUNGER
2. ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION
3. PROMOTE DECENT WORK
4. PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY
5. REDUCE INFANT MORTALITY
6. IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH
7. FIGHT AIDS, PALUDISM AND OTHER DISEASES
8. GUARANTEE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
9. FORM A WORLD-WIDE ASSOCIATION FOR DEVELOPMENT

The Campaign developed by FOCO and the institutions participating in the Coalition includes, as one its main activities, the creation of the National Forum Against Poverty.  The Forum consists of well-known people and social leaders who have decided to join forces in the fight for equality and the eradication of poverty.  They recognize these goals as necessary foundations on which to build the just, inclusive and supportive society that we all strive for.  Amongst the noteworthy individuals invited to join the Forum are: Martha Pelloni; Eduardo Jozami; Abraham Gak; Padre Carlos Accaputo; Hamurabi Noufouri; Susana Checa; Adolfo Pérez Esquivel; Estela Carlotto; Aldo Etchegoyen; Stella Maris Maldonado; Washington Uranga; Dante Gullo; Alejandro Isla; Diana Maffia; Federico Schuster; Agustín Salvia; Laura Conte; Rabino Daniel Goldman; Graciela di Marco; Norberto Rodríguez;Victor De Gennaro; Artemio López; Alberto Bialakowsky; Marta Vazquez; Edgardo Form; Aldo Neri; Alberto Morlachetti; and Jorge Carpio.

To achieve the inclusion of the Millennium Development Goals and the fight to eradicate poverty in public discussions, the FORUM holds, apart from its regular activities, workshops, seminars, open discussion meetings, amongst other events, on key dates such as the International Day for Eradication of Poverty, the International Women’s Day, and the International Human Rights Day.
